India scored a competitive 268 runs against West Indies at the M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. However, India with their famed batting lineup could not play all the 50 overs of their innings. They were bowled out in 49.1 overs. Yet, the total that India achieved is a good one on the Chennai pitch.
The star of the Indian batting was Yuvraj Singh. He scored 113 runs in 123 balls. In his innings which lasted 163 minutes, he hit 10 fours and 2 big sixes. Virat Kohli gave him good company. Kohli scored 59 runs in 76 balls with the help of five boundaries. Both scored 122 runs for the third wicket in 23.5 overs.
The highlight of this partnership was the risk-free play. Both the players were scoring freely but at the same time it was important that they do not lose any wickets. Yuvraj and Virat were successful in doing exactly the same thing. That proved to be a big bonus for the batsmen coming in next.
Earlier, the absence of Virender Sehwag forced the Indian think tank to alter the batting order a bit. Gautam Gambhir opened the batting with Sachin Tendulkar. However, Tendulkar was unlucky to be dismissed only on two. In fact, he walked instead of waiting for the umpire’s decision.
But a fiery spell from Ravi Rampaul sent India on the back foot during various stages of their batting. That is why they could not reach a score of 300 runs, which very much seemed to be on the cards when Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli were batting.
The fast bowler went on to take his first five wicket haul in the World Cup. He took important wickets at the start of the Indian innings and was also responsible for wiping off the tail.
Suresh Raina who played his first match of the World Cup was dismissed cheaply for only four runs. Yusuf Pathan did get the powerplay overs to play. But he too could not impress with his explosive batting.
