India will be playing their revenge match against Australia in the second quarter final at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad. The pitch at Motera has always been the flattest pitch around. India has always had favorable conditions on flat pitches. The Motera pitch is no exception either.
The Motera pitch has always been drier than the other pitches which has always helped India. Secondly, there is a cover of red soil on the pitch. This means there will be some amount of turn on the pitch.
Australia has history of showing a struggle playing on turning pitches. The warm-up match before the 2011 World Cup officially started is a proof of this. The match was played at Bengaluru, which is also one of the turning pitches.
If the pitch is turning for India, so will it turn for Australia as well. But Indian batsmen have always been known to play spin well. Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh along with M S Dhoni can all play spin to the best of their ability.
It is a good chance for someone like Harbhajan Singh, who holds exceptional record against Australia to show his bowling skills. He is already running short of wickets and confidence and this match is one of the best chances he has.
Australia’s leader, Ricky Ponting is short of runs and there have been constant pressure on him to perform. His individual form is a matter of concern and if Australia loses this match, he might be playing his last World Cup match ever.
On paper, Australia might be a strong side with favorable history. However, India certainly holds the edge with home support as an added advantage. It will be a face-off between the two legends – Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, where Sachin is two steps ahead of Ponting.
We wish India luck and hope that they take revenge of the 2003 World Cup finals.
