Chhavi Rajawat : A role model for young Indians

Chhavi Rajawat was in limelight at 11th Info-Poverty World Conference held at the UN. The jeans clad women sarpanch from a remote village in Rajasthan – Soda was talk of the conference. Chhavi Rajawat became the face of changing India. Chhavi Rajawat became leading face of changing women in male dominated Indian society.

Chhavi Rajawat is an Indian politician. She is the sarpanch of her village Soda, 60 km from Jaipur. Although well educated (MBA) the 31 year old Chhavi left the plush job in Delhi to become the first lady Sarpanch of her village Joda in Rajasthan. Her grandfather Brig Raghubir Singh was the sarpanch of the village, from which she too was elected.

Education

Chhavi Rajawat was born in Rajasthan. She is an alumni of Rishi Valley School, Bangalore,  Lady Shri Ram College for Women (University of Delhi) and a management graduate from Indian Institute of Modern Management, Pune now known as Balaji Institute of Modern Management Pune

Early Career of Chhavi Rajawat

She left her corporate job and city life to join politics. She became the Sarpanch (Head of a Village) of Soda, a village about sixty kilometers form Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Chhavi Rajawat’s path to  fame

Soda was a village largely known for its water bodies. However Soda was losing them as one after the other water body was drying out. After becoming sarpanch, the first task that Chhavi Rajawat took upon herself was to desilt an old water body. The number of people who joined her in the task voluntarily was another instance of her popularity there.

On 25th March, 2011, Chhavi Rajawat addressed delegates at the 11th Info-Poverty World Conference held at the United Nations. Chhavi Rajat was well-received at the meeting, followed by praises across the national news.

Chhavi Rajawat became such a leading face of changing women in male dominated Indian social fabric that her facebook page is now full of wall comments. We wish many women and men in India to follow the example of Chhavi Rajawat and work at a grassroots level. Becoming MLA or MP is not the only job – even Sarpanch also play an important role. Imaging what India will become if an MBA daughter or son works for people in each village.
