Peta tells Poonam Pandey to strip for animals, not cricketers

Strip for a cause, says Peta
Peta tells Poonam Pandey: Strip for the cause of animals not for the cricketers.

MUMBAI: Animal rights activists have asked model Poonam Pandey to strip for the sake of animals instead of vowing to bare it all if Indiawins the World Cup.

Chief functionary of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) India, Poorva Joshipura, has requested the 20-year-old model to star in their ad campaign that will take up the cause of animals that are tortured and exploited.

"While we enjoy matches, animals suffer when they are skinned to make cricket balls,'' Joshipura wrote to Poonam, urging her to join Peta in their efforts to force the Indian Cricket Council to switch to synthetic cricket balls. The animal rights NGO had earlier written to the ICC president Sharad Pawar on the same issue. Incidentally, several international celebrities, including Pamela Anderson, have posed in the buff for various Peta campaigns.

Animals slaughtered for their skin endure extreme crowding and deprivation; castration, branding, tail-docking and dehorning without any pain relief and cruel transport and slaughter. In India, where much of the world's leather comes from, cattle are marched for days to slaughter without food or water, stated PETA India's letter to the 20-year-old model.

Those who collapse from exhaustion have their eyes smeared with chilli peppers and tobacco and their tails broken in an effort to keep them moving. At India's abattoirs, animals are often skinned and dismembered while they are still conscious, making for a bloody, horrific sight.
